Settling In

Starting university is a big deal, and I mean big. New friends, independence and academic challenges can be both exciting and terrifying. As I embarked on this journey I found settling into university life a tough process but one that would shape me in ways I never expected.

Many students get to experience the thrill of moving to a new city for university and I was one of them. I was born in India so I was venturing into unknown territory. The campus was my new environment and I was surrounded by new people and new opportunities.

Freshers’ week was a mad whirlwind of events and meet and greets. Lovely to meet new people and get stuck in with the uni! So many clubs and societies to choose from. Although this was a bit overwhelming at first it, set us up perfectly for making new friends. Going to as many university events as possible allowed me to expand my social network and just feel like I belonged. I think it’s easy to go to university and become lonely. That’s why you should get involved and get out there! Meeting new people showed me that everyone is in the same position of just wanting to make friends at university so don’t be shy and go for it.

As time went on the initial excitement wore off and reality hit. Balancing coursework, assignments and exams was a challenge. I soon found out that being organised and having a routine made all the difference. I created a study schedule and spent my time in the Leddy Library to focus and get all my work done. By doing so I was able to manage my coursework and still have a social life. University life is an exciting but overwhelming experience. But the journey is so worth it for personal growth, self discovery and lifelong friendships. With time, patience and a willingness to go for new experiences, university life can be a transformative and enriching chapter in your life. As I look back on my own journey I can’t help but appreciate the impact university life has had on me.
